It's time for the U.S. to get out of Russia's face
According to the mainstream media, a new Cold War is starting between the U.S. and Russia. As they see it, Russia in general, and Putin in particular, is always in the wrong.
I say that's hogwash. There's no earthly reason why Russia should be our enemy, except for the fact that the U.S. has been doing everything it can to encroach on their space, against our own interests as well as theirs. Why do we insist on repeating the mistakes of the nineteenth-century British Empire? Instead, there are plenty of good reasons why the U.S. should clean up its act and stand shoulder to shoulder with Russia against the jihadists.
In his column, Who Lost Russia? Pat Buchanan explains how our relations with Russia went wrong, and what we should do now. In my opinion, a sincere apology on our part would be a good place to start.

I can't say I agree. I actually went to school in the Soviet Union, served as an ICBM Missile Commander, worked with the Russians getting the Open Skies Treaty ratified, and the list goes on. Putin is a throw back to the Stalinist era. His rhetoric is really for internal consumption. His position against missile defense does not make sense. We are offering to share the technology with the Russians. Why not? It won't stop an all-out barrage of ICBMs anyway. It does have the potential to stop either a terrorististic attack by Iran, North Korea or even a rogue launch from Russia.
We need to convince the Russians they can have their space on the world stage, increase Russian pride, and provide a more stable world by extending missile defense across the Russian steppes. Mr. Buchanan is a great American patriot, but his xenophic tendencies don't really make sense. Next step: Help Russia develop a strong energy industry to counter Middle East oil.
